How Solar Works

Every wonder how solar modules harness the power of the sun and convert that energy into electricity? The video to the right explains just that while also providing benefits of choosing SunPower.

The SunPower Advantage

When considering solar, there are numerous decisions to make:

  • How much power does an array produce?
  • How are the solar cells manufactured?
  • At what rate does each module degrade?
  • What does the warranty cover and how long does it last?
  • How much does the system cost?

When we set out to select a manufacturer to work with, it was clear SunPower was the winner. Year after year, SunPower raises the bar; fine tuning product, improving efficiency, durability, its warranty. The end result; a comprehensive solar package that provides customers the confidence knowing their array is built to last, will produce an abundance of clean energy, all backed by an industry leading 25 year warranty.

Going Solar

1. No Cost, No Commitment Solar Assessment and Design

You've contacted us because you want want to produce clean energy and take control of your utility bill. One of the first steps in designing your SunPower solar array is to review your prior 12-18 months of electricity consumption. This, along with other important information gathered during our onsite consultation, allow us to create a custom design and proposal for your home, complete with estimated future savings and affordable financing options.

2. Installation

You've signed your contracts and your installation date has arrived. As an authorized SunPower dealer, we've been through rigorous training and certification programs to assure your install is done to the highest of standards. We even handle all permitting and various paperwork for you.

3. Commission Your SunPower Solar Array

After inspections are complete and final connections are made to your local utility, it's time to activate your SunPower solar array and start producing clean sustainable energy.

Financing Options

Purchase

You own the system and the energy it produces.

  • You purchase your SunPower® system directly.
  • A home equity loan can be used and may be tax-deductible.
  • You can keep any solar tax credits and/or state and local incentives for which you may be eligible.
  • Purchasing your SunPower system directly can maximize your savings. Over time, your system can pay for itself through your utility bill savings.

Loan

You own your solar system, and pay for it with a loan.

  • Various loan payment terms and conditions available (including optional full prepayment without penalty).
  • You can keep any solar tax credits and/or state and local incentives for which you may be eligible
  • For many customers, the combination of the loan payment and the remaining power bill is less than their previous electric bill.

Lease

SunPower owns the system on your roof.

  • You pay a monthly amount to "rent" the system and use the energy you produce
  • For many customers, their lease and remaining utility bill are lower than their previous electric bill
  • System production is guaranteed for 20 years. If something breaks, we'll fix it.
  • When you sell your home, you can assign the lease to the new homeowner, subject to credit approval. SunPower facilitates this process.

FAQ's

+ How much does a solar array cost?

Each solar array is tailored to the site and specific needs of our customers and therefore unique. However, the cost of an array is dependent on a few main factors: how much energy do you currently use, what percentage of that energy do you want to offset, as well as how much area on your property is viable for solar.

With state and federal incentives plus low interest loans, MA residents are typically cash flow positive in the first year.

+ What state and federal incentives are currently available?

Customers who have decided to go solar know first hand the benefits of doing so. Lower utility bills, predictable energy costs for 25+ years, the ability to produce clean energy, federal, state, and local incentives to offset costs, and much more. But do you know that federal incentives for residential solar installs is set to expire in 2021 and Massachusetts Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SREC2) is changing to Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) in 2018. Take advantage of these generous tax incentives while they last.

Federal Tax Incentive

  • 30% tax credit of the total cost to go solar, including installation through 2019
  • Credit decreases to 26% for tax year 2020
  • Credit decreases to 22% for tax year 2021
  • Credit expires as of December 31, 2021

State Tax Incentive

Residential Energy Credit - 15% of the net expenditure for renewable energy source property, or $1000, whichever is less.

State Solar Incentives

Massachusetts has always been one of the best states for solar. Not only does the Bay State have the highest electricity rates that lead to a short payback period for your solar investment, it also has a history of having strong solar incentives for property owners looking to own a solar system.

One of the best solar incentives currently available in the state is the Solar Renewable Energy Certificate (SREC) market, which incentivizes the production of a solar panel system for 10 years. However, the current SREC II program has reached its cap, leading the state to roll out a new incentive. Legislators are hopeful that this SREC II replacement, SMART (Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target), will encourage the solar industry to continue growing throughout the state, and also decrease costs for electric utility customers.

Whether SREC II or SMART, both award customers based on the amount of electricity produced by their solar array. However, there are some practical differences in the two programs. With SRECs, you’re receiving a certificate that you can trade on the market, the value of which varies depending on market conditions (including supply and demand). SMART, on the other hand, is fixed: once you’re awarded a particular incentive amount per kWh, that is going to be what you receive for the duration of the incentive program.

+ How much can I save by going solar?

Individual savings depend on a variety of conditions; however, many of our customers enjoy 100% offset of thier utility bill, excluding the standard serice charge.

+ What does the SunPower warranty cover?

With SunPower's Complete Confidence Warranty, SunPower covers 100% of repair or replacement costs due to defects related to workmanship and materials, including labor, shipping, and parts for 25 years. Plus SunPower guarantees that your panels won’t lose more than 8% of its original power output in 25 years.

A 10-year product warranty term for monitoring hardware.

+ Is mainteneance required on my solar array?

Under most circumstances, solar panels do not require cleaning because seasonal rains are usually adequate. If necessary, you can clean the panels by spraying them with your regular garden hose. We strongly recommend that you only clean panels in the early morning or late evening rather than when the sun is at its peak or when the panels are warm.

General Safety Precautions

  1. Do not clean the panels during the middle of the day. To avoid panel damage, allow the panels to cool before cleaning.
  2. Do not use abrasive cleaners or anything that could scratch the surface of the panels.
  3. Do not attempt to access the roof for panel cleaning or inspection.

+ Will I still need the electric utility after going solar?

Even though going solar puts you back in control of your electric bill for years to come, you are still connected to the grid and use a meter provided by the utility. As solar energy needs to be consumed in real time, you will use the power generated from your SunPower array during daylight hours and from the utility during the night. Any excess energy produced from your array will generate a utility bill credit that can be used throughout the year.

+ How long does it take for a system to be installed?

From the time you sign your contracts to your installation date typically takes 60-90 days. However, the actual install of a conventional array takes one to two days.
